About the 2012 Games

In July 2012, the UK will be hosting the Games of the XXX Olympiad and the Paralympic Games. Nearly 15,000 athletes from all over the world will be competing in 26 Olympic Sports and 20 Paralympic Sports watched by more than nine million spectators and broadcast live to billions all over the world.

The 2012 Olympic Games will take place from 27 July to 12 August 2012, The 2012 Paralympic Games will take place from 29 August to 9 September 2012.

Up until that time the UK is taking part in a four-year Cultural Olympiad – a programme of community events and projects stimulated by the Games to showcase performing arts and creative industries – which will culminate in the opening ceremony on 27 July 2012.

Most of the sports themselves will take place in or around the Olympic Stadium in the South East except for Football, which will take place at various stadia around the UK including Old Trafford, Manchester, and sailing which will take place at Weymouth and Portland.

LOCOG

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) – chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe – is responsible for preparing and staging the Olympic Games.

DCMS

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) leads for Government on the delivery of the Games. It is responsible for the overall finances for the Games and sponsorship of the Olympic Delivery Authority.

ODA

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is the public body responsible for developing and building the new venues and infrastructure for the Games and their use after 2012.

The Nations and Regions Group (NRG)

A sub-committee of LOCOG the role of NRG is to make sure the whole of the UK is involved in and benefits from the 2012 Games and is made up of 12 senior representatives from UK business and sport.

What’s Happening in Cheshire & Warrington

Cheshire & Warrington 2012 Steering Group

A steering group has been established to ensure that Cheshire and Warrington gains maximum benefit from the London 2012 Games. Chaired by Visit Chester & Cheshire, the partnership includes Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership, Cheshire East Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Warrington Borough Council, Cheshire Chambers of Commerce, Colleges and Universities.

Embrace the Games Legacy Framework

The Cheshire & Warrington 2012 Steering Group has produced a Strategic Framework setting out the sub-regional vision to create a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games and other major events coming to the UK over the next decade.   Entitled “Embrace the Games” the framework seeks to co-ordinate activity in the sub-region around four key themes with each theme having a Champion to drive this work forward:

Sport and Physical Activity – championed by Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership
Cultural Olympiad – championed by Warrington Borough Council on behalf of the Local Authorities
Visitor Economy – championed by Visit Chester & Cheshire
Business Opportunities – championed by CWEC.

A further theme, Volunteering, underpins these.

Pre Games Training Camps

Cheshire and Warrington has 10 approved pre games training camps listed in the official LOCOG training camps directory. The training camps are actively seeking teams from all over the world to train at their facilities. This will have a positive impact on local economies with retail and other local providers of goods and services benefiting from the influx of overseas visitors.

Business Opportunities - London 2012 Contracts & Public Sector Procurement

There are expected to be around 7,000 direct contracts for London 2012 which will form supply chains of around 75,000 opportunities.  

Opportunities range from construction, engineering and manufacturing to creative, merchandising and retail.
